HOW TO: add or remove people to start a new group message

As technology advances, our definition of “fast-paced” changes. Relying on lengthy, time-consuming emails in the midst of a looming deadline is no longer realistic. Group chat tools can be used in the workplace to make straightforward decisions and get clarity through immediate, stream-of-conscious conversation at the rate that events change. For millennials, group conversations have emerged as an essential component of social culture. Platforms for group chat also make it simpler for remote employees to work with their team. Workers now have a centralized channel of communication with all the resources they require in one place thanks to the fact that they have developed into full suites with a variety of plugins. Employees working from home or in other workplaces are no longer at danger for receiving incorrect information or giving a delayed response.

What is Google Chat?

Google Chat is a secure communications tool designed to provide easy business communications within the Google Workspace ecosystem. With Google Chat, teams collaborate via text, build collaborative chat rooms, share documents, deliver presentations, and establish web conferences. Google Chat was called Hangouts Chat and worked as a more business-oriented version of the consumer Hangouts. Google Chat expands on the features of the standard version of Hangouts by adding a plethora of team collaboration features and integrations.  

What is the difference between Google Chat and Google Hangouts?

According to Google, Chat, “Is an intelligent communication app for teams that takes direct messaging in Google Hangouts and evolves it to reflect the way modern teams talk business.”  As a result, Google Chat is something like the evolution of Hangouts. It grants that same one-on-one communication but expands on it to be more effective in a business setting.

  So, pick your device and start using Google Chat to reach you business needs.  

COMPUTER

  1. Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
  2. On the left, under “Chat,” select a group conversation.
  3. At the top, next to the conversation name, click the Down arrow or More options and then Add people & bots.
  4. Enter names or email addresses of the people you want to add.
  5. Click Send.
  6. Optional: To remove people from the conversation, at the top, next to the conversation name, click the Down arrow or More options and then View members.
  7. Next to their name, click More options and Remove from space.

ANDROID

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app.
  2. Select an existing group conversation.
  3. At the top, next to the conversation name, tap the Right arrow and then Start a new chat.
  4. Add or remove people from the existing group:
    • To add people, enter their names or under Frequent, tap a suggestion.
    • To remove people, tap their name and then Delete.
  5. Tap Done.

IPHONE & IPAD

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app.
  2. Select an existing group conversation.
  3. At the top, next to the conversation name, tap the Right arrow and then Start a new chat.
  4. Add or remove people from the existing group:
    • To add people, enter their names or under Frequent, tap a suggestion.
    • To remove people, tap their name and then Delete.
  5. Tap Done.
